How To Spoil Your Guy On Valentine’s Day

When you think of Valentine’s Day, what comes to mind? In the stores, you always see chocolates, teddy bears and flowers. You hear about getting jewelry or you’ll see women getting a flower arrangement from their guy. It’s supposed to be a day for love, but of course it has been commercialized and much of the marketing is directed at men and the things they should be buying their wives or girlfriends. While Valentine’s Day can be about love for your friends, your family, your children or even for yourself, I’m talking about the guys today. Here are 12 ways to spoil your guy on Valentine’s Day.

1. A Special Valentine’s Day Meal

Cook him his favorite meal

They say the way to man’s heart is through his stomach, so this is definitely one way to spoil him. If you don’t feel like cooking, order his favorite meal for takeout.

2. Valentine’s Dessert

Does your guy have a favorite treat that you make? If so, this is another great way to make him feel special. Plus you took the time to make it, so it makes it even better!

3. Have a Valentine’s Picnic

Have you noticed a theme here? This post won’t be all about food, I promise, but a picnic can definitely be romantic. If the weather is nice, put some food and drinks in a basket and find a nice place to have a picnic. Maybe you have a favorite park that you go to or maybe you like to spend time on the beach. You can pick a spot that is special to the both of you or try somewhere new. Either way, it’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors and reconnect with each other.

4. Valentine’s Movie Night

Does your guy love movies? If so, this is for you. Rent or buy one of his favorite movies or choose a new movie to watch together. Grab some popcorn and your favorite drinks. This is a perfect night in for cuddling on the couch. You could also binge watch a tv show together. That’s always fun!

5. Game Night

Is your guy into sports? If his sport is in season watch a game with him. Don’t forget his favorite snacks. Grab some things you like too. Especially if you’re not that into the game. Sometimes the best gift is just letting him do something he really enjoys.

6. Books

If your guy likes to read, you can get him a book that he’d like. Who knows. Maybe it’s something you can both read together. Sometimes books can make great conversation topics.

7. Create a Love Puzzle

You can create a personalized puzzle. This cross word maker is great. I made one for my guy that was all about him. The possibilities with this are endless.

8. Date Night Subscription Boxes

Are you out of date ideas? If you feel like you’ve tried everything, why not get one of these date night subscription boxes? They have fun activities to get to know each other better and the best part is they come once a month, so you almost have to make time for it, right? I suppose this is something for yourself as well, but it can be good for both of you and your relationship.

9. Valentine’s Gift Baskets

If you really want to pamper your guy, why not. Make him a gift basket? Some ideas are personal items, sports/fitness, tools, gaming, things for his desk, favorite snacks and or candy etc. You can combine themes to make the perfect personalized gift basket for your man.

10. Valentine’s Photo Album

A lot of men love photos. You can make him a photo album of all the things that he loves. It can be all photos of you or if you have children, you may want to include them in the album. You can take pictures of his favorite places, things that bring back memories, his pets, etc.

You can also make a photo collage or a vision board.

how I feel about you,
our bucket list.

You can even do this together. It will help you reconnect around your hopes and dreams as a couple.

11. Make a Valentin’es Playlist

Most people love music, so create a special playlist for him. You can do this on a streaming service, through Itunes or if you’re old school, you can burn a CD. Does anyone do that anymore?

12. Write a Love Letter

One of the simplest things you can do is to make him a heart felt card or write a love letter. Some men aren’t great at expressing their feelings, but most guys would be appreciative if you told him everything you love about him. Women are supposed to be better at expressing feelings. Well, that’s according to the stereotype, but if the love letter is not for you, there are other options.

You can find love quotes that resonate with how you feel about him. Leave them on sticky notes where he can see them, send him texts or sprinkle them in your love letter if you decide to write one.

10 Valentine’s Books for Preschoolers

I love sharing book recommendations and seeing all these blog posts with lists of books for different themes. Since Valentine’s Day is less than a week away, I thought I’d share our list of 10 Valentine Books for preschoolers. Here is what we’ve been reading and some new books we will read this week.

1. Love From the Crayons

Rosebud loves the book, “The Day the Crayons Quit”, so she’d probably love this one too. I haven’t seen this one before, but this will be one of our must reads for Valentine’s Day.

We found this one on Youtube the other day and it was a cute story.

Of course, Rosebud wanted to read this because of the title, but it’s one of those books with a good message.

22 Unique Valentine’s Cards and Party Favors for Kids

Every year throughout elementary school, we’d hand out Valentine’s cards and our children are continuing this tradition. Most of the cards were generic and ended up in the trash soon after Valentine’s Day just because what would we keep them for? Occasionally, I’d get a more memorable card. Either it was homemade and there was something special about it. There could be a hand drawn picture, a 2d collage of hearts or something else that made it unique. One person even outlined their hand drawn pictures with puff paints.

I am crafty, but not when it comes to making cards or drawing, so finding something store bought, but unique is the plan. Rosebud will be handing out cards at preschool, so I wanted to share these unique Valentine’s Day cards with you in case you are in the same boat. If you are looking for cards that pop up, smell good, are interesting shapes or include a little something extra, keep reading. Valentine’s Day Gifts for Your Little Girl

Valentine’s Day is less than a month away. While I think it’s over commercialized like everything else, I want to make the day fun and special for Rosebud. Our tradition is that I surprise her with a small Valentine’s Day gift in the morning. I haven’t decided exactly what her gift will be yet, but I’ll admit that shopping for little girls is too much fun. It gave me inspiration for this post. If you are shopping for a Valentine’s gift for little girl, I got you covered. This post has plenty of gift ideas to get you started.

Build A Bouquet Play Set

Rosebud loves this flower play set. There are a few different kinds and they all look like they can be connected. I got her this set last year and she still plays with it, but I’m thinking of getting her a second set, so that she can make her flower gardens bigger. This toy is great for color recognition, creativity and learning about different kinds of flowers.

Jewelry

Most little girls I know love jewelry. Rosebud has this bracelet and necklace set with rose pendant. She is not a fan of jewelry, so I’m saving it for when she’s a little older. This set is very pretty and I was surprised that it seems well made. I was impressed with it for a little girl’s necklace. There are tons of options for girls jewelry. The options are endless.

Stuffed Animal

Stuffed animals are a classic gift. You can go with a classic teddy bear or with something unique. Something soft and cuddly is always nice.

Books

You can’t go wrong with books. There are so many great Valentines books out there. Here are just a few to give you an idea.

Valentine’s Dress

If you are going anywhere fancy for this Valentine’s Day or if your little girl just loves dressing up, you could get her a nice dress.

Kinetic Sand

I got this sand for Rosebud for Christmas and it is the coolest thing. It doesn’t dry out, you can make so many neat things and it doesn’t make a huge mess. There are lots of cool molds you can buy and lots of colors of sand to choose from. I’m thinking of getting the purple shimmer for Rosebud because purple is her favorite color. You could go with red to celebrate Valentine’s Day or maybe white shimmer for winter time.

Art Supplies

If your little girl is an artist like mine is, why not get some Valentines themed art supplies? I love art because it allows children to use their imaginations.

Play Food

Speaking of imaginations, Rosebud is loving her play kitchen and all the pretend food to go with it. Why not get your child’s favorite food in toy form? Maybe one of these desserts or the fruit salad?

Crafting Kits

Rosebud is still too young for some of these things, but if you have a school age girl, a crafting kit might be the perfect thing. Some ideas are jewelry making, latch hook, gimp, modeling clay etc. Not only is creating something fun, but you could do these activities together. It could just be a relaxing activity after a long day at school or you could make Valentine’s Day gifts for others together. Either way, it’s a way to spend quality time which leads me to the last gift idea on my list.

Quality Time

This doesn’t cost a thing. Well, it doesn’t have to. The main thing to show your children on Valentine’s Day is that you love them and want to spend time with them. Do you have a favorite activity that you like to do together or as a family? Here are some ideas.

Baking cookies together,
Taking a sight seeing walk,
Doing each other’s nails,
Spa day with facials and or foot bath,
Watching a favorite movie,
Reading books together,
Planning and cooking a meal,
Playing board games,
Doing puzzles,
Exploring places around town that you haven’t seen before,
Writing in a 2-way journal.

If your child is older, this would be a fun way to stay connected. Sometimes it’s easier to talk about things face to face, so it’s a great way to keep the lines of communication open. While this is not exactly an activity that you would necessarily do together, I think it counts as quality time as you are taking the time to stop and listen.

Candy Shop

This was a left over activity from Valentine’s Day. We used the candy boxes with the chocolate play-dough to make some pretend treats. Here are some of the things we made and the skills we are working on using play-dough.

What’s on the tray:

Chocolate play-dough,

Candy boxes,

Measuring cup and spoons,

Rolling pin,

Play-dough tools

Cookie cutters.

Fine Motor Skills

There is a lot of talk these days about children not getting enough practice developing their fine motor skills. For those who don’t know, fine motor skills is the early childhood education jargon for saying the things you do with your hands. Basically the smaller muscle groups. These are the skills children need for writing, cutting with scissors, tying shoes etc. Gross motor skills use the larger muscles for running, climbing etc. There are many ways for children to practice these skills like stringing beads, using stickers, popping bubblewrap or scooping water or sand. Play-dough is great though because you can role it out, squeeze it, mold it, use tools to cut it and so on. All of those actions strengthen the hands and fingers. Rosebud rolled out circles, hid beads in the play-dough to find and cut it into pieces using the play-dough cutter.

Pretend Play

Another wonderful thing about play-dough is you can turn it into whatever you want it to be. Since we had the candy boxes, we decided to make pretend candy. Some of our candies were circles and squares. We also made cakes and decorated them with the beads. As with other pretend play, it helps expand a child’s imagination and allows them to try out different roles. Pretend play can also help children work out issues they may be having difficulty with. It also helps enhance social skills. We pretended to make cups of hot chocolate. Rosebud grabbed out of my hand, so we worked on sharing and asking for turns. We worked as a team to decorate the cakes.

Math

I asked Rosebud which shape I should make and she suggested I make squares. I’ve used play-dough often to help her with shape recognition. She’s gotten really good at identifying most shapes. Sorting, classifying and identifying shapes are all necessary pre-math skills.

Literacy

On the literacy side, I made some letters and asked if she knew what they were. She has become interested in letters, but cannot name them yet. she has started asking me what they are and what they are for. If we are playing with letters, I’ll point out the letter, tell her its name and a word that it starts with. In this case, I first made her initials and then did a simple abc. This is a fun way to practice some of the pre-reading skills.

The best part is the kids are simply having fun without worrying about what they are learning or haven’t learned yet. What are some of your go to activities with play-dough? Tell me in the comments.

Melting Hearts

We did this simple science activity before Valentine’s Day and Rosebud loved it. It kept her occupied for over an hour. What I love about science for young kids is that is so simple and they are learning without even realizing it.

What you need:

Ice cube trays,

Water,

Food coloring,

Small bowls,

Eye droppers

Directions:

1. Make some ice cubes. I used heart shapes, but you can make whatever shape you wish.

I added red food coloring to some of my hearts before freezing them.

2. Next, I took out a few ice cubes once they were frozen and then put them in a small bowl.

3. To help melt the ice cubes, fill another small bowl with water and show your child how to use the eye dropper to transfer the water to the bowl with the ice cubes.

This activity is so simple, but it’s great for science. We talked about melting, warm vs cold, the size of the ice cubes and how the water was changing color. This activity is great for fine motor skills as well. Next time, I will make more colored ice cubes and we can experiment with mixing colors as the ice melts. If you are using larger ice cubes, you can add treasures inside.

What Valentine’s Day is Really About

This morning, I made a video with Rosebud and shared it with friends. It was basically a video message from her telling everyone, happy Valentine’s day while playing with her build a bouquet play set.
 
During the video, I mentioned something about how on Valentine’s Day, you give cards and gifts to people you love. I told Rosebud that I gave her the flower set because I love her. I didn’t go into too much detail other than that, but after I posted the video, I felt guilty. I wondered if people would be judging me because I told her That Valentine’s Day was for giving cards and gifts. Would people think I’m materialistic? Yes, I’m an over thinker.

Then I thought that the more abstract ideas about Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be something that a three-year-old would understand anyway. For her, Valentine’s Day may be about gifts and cards because they are tangible, but as she gets older, I want her to understand that Valentine’s Day is about more than that. You might get cards and gifts for people you love, but the more important part is spending time with them. It’s about having fun, laughing, making memories together and showing them you care. I want her to know that you don’t need a commercialized day to do those things. They should be done every day.

I spent the majority of my day at work, but Rosebud spent it with family playing with her gifts, eating candy and having fun. When I was finally done with work, Little Guy and his mom came over to spend time with Rosebud and I. He had a Valentine for her. There was a goody bag with a crayon heart, a couple heart shaped lights and a flower. They were making quite a light show. His mom joked that it looked like a rave party. I ordered pizza and his mom brought a bottle of wine. Little Guy was too excited to settle down to eat, but he and Rosebud played. They laughed, chased each other around and argued over toys as only toddlers and preschoolers do, but in the end, they enjoy each other’s company. His mom and I talked, had a few laughs and enjoyed our pizza and wine.

Isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is about? Spending time with people you care about. It may be a day for couples, but if you are not in a relationship, you have to find a way to make it fun and that’s what I did. It’s too easy to get caught up in all that commercialization. I also think that when you have kids, holidays take on a whole new meaning. I am grateful that I spent the best parts of today with Rosebud and my new friends. Thank you for making today fun and memorable and for the reminder of what Valentine’s Day is really about.

Hot Coco Play-dough

I found this chocolate play-dough recipe several years ago and it smells good enough to eat. When you cook it, it smells so much like brownies. I’ve never tried eating it, but I’m guessing it doesn’t taste as good as it smells. Anyway, I love using this play-dough for a Valentine’s Day or hot coco theme.

Ingredients

1 1/4 cups flour,
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup salt,
1/2 Tablespoon cream of Tartar,
1/2 Tablespoon oil,
1 1/2 cups water,
A couple drops of glycerin for shine.

Directions

1. Mix dry ingredients in a medium size saucepan.
2. Add wet ingredients and stir together over low heat until a ball of dough forms.
3. Remove play dough from the saucepan and knead by hand until dough is smooth and evenly colored. You’ll want to add the drops of glycerin at this stage. If you are kneading and find the play-dough is still too wet, add a little flour.

Store in an airtight container.

Rosebud loved this play-dough. She kept saying how yummy it smelled and she said it was very squishy. We made cups of coco with marshmallows. I used white beads.

We made cakes and brownies.

I made chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate roses that were quickly squished. I made objects for Rosebud to guess, even this silly shoe.
